TASK 01 : MASTER PATTERN BLOCK

WEEK 1 - WEEK 4

PATTERN BLOCK MAKING

Week 1

Today, Mr. Riza brought us go through the module information, told us about the requirements for the upcoming tasks and taught us what is pattern drafting and garment making. Mr Riza briefed us about assignment 1 and asked us to prepare tools for the activities.

Week 2
We learnt about 5 basic types of hand stitches and how to draw a bodice block and sleeve block. At first I found it difficult because my table is not big enough to fit a drafting paper but I tried my best to follow up every steps. As I followed what is in the handouts and what Mr Riza taught, everything gets easier. Even though sometimes we felt confused with a few steps but Mr Riza was guiding us patiently.
After the classes, I settled with all the problems I faced and tried my best to finish the 2 sizes of bodice and sleeve block. When I was drafting the second bodice block, I found out actually this activity is not as hard as I thought. Just have to be patient and make sure everything is in the right measurement because this will affect the results of the garment. I felt satisfied when I finished the first work. I started to try drafting the skirt and everything went smoothly because the information was well written in the handout.

Week 3
Today, Mr Riza guided us to draft pants block and how to transfer it into the box board after we done drafting all the blocks on mahjong paper. Unfortunately, my mahjong paper is not long enough for the pants block so I have to combine 2 papers. This week is obviously easier for me because we did have experience on last week. After the tutorial, sir checked on our previous works and make sure we were doing the right thing because we have to make sure everything is correct before we transfer them into box board.

Bodice Block ready transfer to box board

Before we transfer bodice block to box board, we have to shape the waist. Below are the classic waist shaping in size 10 and size 12. After we finished drawing that, we can transfer it into box board.

The first step is put the mahjong paper on the box board, and use tracing wheel to trace it. After that, follow the traced marks and draw out the important lines on boxboard. When everything has been done neatly, cut them out. This process is not as hard as the previous one but I have to use the tracing wheel really careful so it won't be out of the lines. Once I traced the lines out, I use pen to draw on boxboard so it looks obvious and clear. I use pencil for some parts that no need to be cut out so at least I understand where are all the hip line, waistline, elbow line and so on.

I made some notes so maybe next time I can refer to them.

Feedback

My thoughts
Mr Riza said it is important to make sure everything is in the right place, with the right measurement.  I believe this lesson is very important as it is the first step in our further work. If we can't do it right, we won't be able to come out a well fitted garment. So far I've learnt all these basic master pattern blocks and I can't wait to use them for my garment works.
