EXERCISE 1 : TYPES OF FABRICS
WEEK 1
Today Mr. Riza taught us about the types of fabrics and also their textures, weights, etc. He asked us to find any five clothes with different fabrics from our wardrobe and show them to the class. I was really nervous about the time so I simply grabbed a few types of clothes. When there’s time left, I checked on google immediately about the fabrics I had chosen because some of them is out of the lists. Hopefully I got them all right!
So here’s the clothes and their fabrics :
 |
Velvet - I think this velvet fabric is quite soft and I like the texture, it is kind of smooth and comfortable when I touch it. Also, it has a distinctive texture so it would be a wonderful choice for parties and celebrations. Although the appearance is shinny as silk fabric, but the weight is not as light as it. It is a type of woven fabric, weaves with two thickness of the material at the same time so we may feel a bit hot while wearing it but it's suitable for a cold weather. |
 |
Denim -
One of the most seen fabric I guess. I do have a lot of skirts, pants and jackets with denim fabric. For me, denim is never goes out of fashion because it's really durable. It won't get dirty, wrinkle or worn-out easily. But, I don't think denim is breathable because it is created by the weft & warp threads, which mean it is a woven fabric. In my opinion, it is more suitable for a cold weather unless the length is short. For example, short pants or short skirts. |

| Lace 1.1 |
 |
Lace 1.2 -
In picture 1.1, the design is totally made with lace but in picture 1.2, the lace is only use for decoration Although they're both lace, the texture is not the same. Texture in picture 1.1 is smooth and soft but picture 1.2 is rough. It is because lace may be made with different types of threads, such as linen, silk or cotton. When I was young, I wasn't really into lace because I think it looked more mature than other fabrics. But for now, I think that lace is an artful and delicate fabric, it shows a sense of elegance.

 |
| Satin Silk (1.1) |
 Silk 1.2
|
To be honest, I'm quite confused with fabric of picture 1.1 but according to the texture and characteristic, I think it is silk. The texture of silk in picture 1.1 is rougher than texture in picture 1.2 so it should be satin silk. Silk fabric has shinny and soft texture so it is very comfortable to wear. Especially when the weather is cold, the texture may be icy to touch. I still remember when I went to Thailand in 2016, I got a chance to see the process of silk making (video above).

 |
Chiffon -
Chiffon fabric is really lightweight and kind of transparent since light can pass through it. Clothes that made with this fabric always need to pair up with other fabrics because it couldn't fully cover up our body. I never work with chiffon but I think it's not easy because of its slippery texture, it may get worn-out easily so we must take good care of it. I think chiffon may be a very nice decoration in some works. Ps. Do not wash it with washing machine.
|
 |
Faux Fur -
This is one of my favourite fabric but not really functional in Malaysia because we don't have winter here. But, I still can wear it to somewhere that has a cold weather or in an air-conditional room. The appearance is thick and it gives a feeling of warmth. I think this fabric is quite suitable for custom or shows because it looks gorgeous and noble as the surface is slightly bigger than other fabrics.

My thoughts:
I love this lesson because I get to know many types of fabrics that I didn't know in the past. It is very important for a designer or buyer to understand the fabrics so only we can discover the most suitable fabric for clothes. Also, we must have a good knowledge of fabrics when it comes to pattern drafting and garment making because the characteristics may affect the result of our works. I'm super excited for our upcoming activities since I'm exploring the knowledge in this industry.
