EXERCISE 2 : BALANCE AND MOVEMENT
WEEK 2 - WEEK 4
Emphasis / Balance / Repetition / Movement
1. Recap of Lectures
Week 2
Today we learnt about 4 Principles of Design which are Emphasis, Balance, Repetition and Movement. And also The Golden Ratio, Rule of Thirds.
At the very first moment, I’m not sure which two principles to choose because they seemed to have their difficulties. So, I decided to explore each of them and see which can match with my ideas. I decided to go for balance and movement because they seem can be easily found in our daily life and they may be interesting to play with.
Lecture Note
Emphasis : used to create dominance and focus in a design work. Various elements such as colour, shapes or value can be used to create emphasis.
Balance : distribution of visual weight in a work of design. It is the visual equilibrium of the elements that causes the image to appear balanced. What to consider?

Repetition : makes a work seem active, repetition of element of design creates rhythms and pattern within the work, variety is essential to keep rhythms exciting and active. Patterns increase visual excitement by enriching surface interest.
Movement : the way a design leads the eye in, around, and through a composition - the path the eye follows. Motion or movement in a visual image occur when objects seem to be moving in visual image. Movement in a visual image comes from the kinds of shapes, forms, lines and curves that are used.

Idea Exploration and Description
1. Balance

Balance 1.1
Idea : bone and lungs |
Ms may find it familiar because this is an idea explored from the previous design in Gestalt Theory. As I said in exercise 1, I wanted to do tree and lungs but failed so I separated these 2 items and derive to something else. In this exercise, I found out that there is a balance between the visual weight of lungs and bone. So, I thought of a connection between them which is if we don’t have lungs, we left bones ( means dead and alive). So I wanted to combine them as my design for balance and see how is the result.
Balance 1.2
At first, I did a sketch with pencil and I was really grapple with which method should I use, either physical or digital. I can't really decided so I made the design with different methods. But in the halfway I thought I should go for watercolour since my other designs are all in black and white, I should do something different. Also, when the design is in watercolour it looks more real.
Balance 1.4
I found it interesting when I finished the colouring because it came out with two different feelings. At the bone side, it looks dead and dry but at the lungs side, there’s so much life. After I finished this design, it made me thought of is life and death balance? So I went to Google and searched for the definition of life and death. This is one of the article I found meaningful so I wanted to share it here : A Balance Between Life and Death - https://www.huffpost.com/entry/lessons-from-steve-jobs_b_1007789
2. Movement
Movement 1.1
Idea : teardrops and pond
When I was brainstorming about the ideas for this principle, I was watching the movie - Occupation : Rainfall. So my idea actually came from the tittle of the movie - RAINFALL. I think this raindrops shape can be a good element for movement so I started to play with it. But I think it’s better to use teardrops than raindrops because it shows a feeling. So my final decision is to play with teardrops instead of raindrops. In addition, I added a curve line for the teardrops so the visual image can be more active.
At first, I sketched it on a paper but I wanted to try using Adobe Illustrator for this exercise so I decided to finish my final design with digital drawing.
For this design, I wanted to show 2 types of movement which is the teardrops and the movement of water in the pond. The reason why I added the pond is because I noticed that people can easily notice a thing when it is moving from somewhere to another. But when it comes to something that only moves in its own area, people take times to notice it. I hope this design can convey a message to people. “In living, no matter how busy we are, we should always remember to slow down and notice the little things.”
Movement 1.3
Also, I played with watercolour because I thought about water when it comes to movement, so I did an experiment to see if the result is good enough. This is actually a way I always like to add into my art work because it looks really freedom and artistic. I think the result is quite fine and it may come out a different look if I add something on it but I felt if I do so, it doesn’t really match the movement principle so I didn't do that. But still, I think it is quite cool to make a video and show the movement of watercolour so I’ll just leave it here.Feedback from Lecturer
On week 4, we had a feedback section with Ms Jinchi, for the movement design, ms asked me to move the design down a bit so the focus will be the movement line of the teardrops and I’m agreed with her. At first I wanted to make 2 points of focus which are the teardrops and the water in the ponds but I think Ms Jinchi got the point because sometimes in design, Less in More. When there are too many things to focus, people could feel confuse with the design. For the balance, Ms is okay with he design but I haven’t done it when we were having the feedback section so everything was still going on.

Reflection on the Exercise
In this exercise, I wanted to add more my personal thoughts to the designs so I started my process with thinking what I want to tell. After I got the ideas, I started revising until fully understand the design principles that I’ve chosen so I can combine them together. I’m quite happy with my works and I hope people can see what I’m trying to tell through the designs. Also, I will keep on exploring ideas so I can insert them in my further design works.
