Exercise 3 : HARMONY & WORD AND IMAGE

EXERCISE 3
WEEK 4 - WEEK 6
Harmony / Unity / Symbol / Word and Image
1. Recap of Lectures :
Week 4
Today we learnt about harmony, unity, proportion and scale. I refer to the video Ms Jinchi sent to us and I knew that a design with perfect harmony and unity is not exciting. Also, too much harmony is boring and too much contrast interrupts the unity.
Harmony : deals with how similar things are to one another. It involves the selection of elements that share a common traits (colour, shape..). It becomes monotony without variety. It is the sense that all of the elements of design fit together. They may fit the same theme, aesthetic style or mood.
Unity : refers to the repetition of particular elements (colours, shapes or materials) throughout the design to pull the look together. It occurs when the elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.
Scale : have to do with size. It is the size of one object in relation to the other objects in a design or artwork. It refer to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure. It can be determined in actual measurement and visual estimates based on comparison.
Proportion : have to do with size. It refers to the size of the parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the same object. It is the relationship of two or more elements in a composition and how they compare to one another with respect to size, colour, quantity, degree, setting and so on. It is said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists between the elements with respect to size or quantity.
Symbol : a sign, shape or object that is used to represent something else. In design, symbol can provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text, to even a whole story.
- Figurative Representation
- Non- figurative Representations
Word and Image : Imagery is a vital part of design, be it print or digital. Viewers can be able to relate to a concept or a brand if the right images are used in a work of design. Therefore it is important to use suitable and relevant images when designing. Typography is the design and arrangement of text to convey a message or concept.
2. My Design Process :
Visual Research
Just some exploration:
At this stage, I was still brainstorming the ideas for unity because I haven’t really sure if I wanted to take this principle for exercise 3. But I’ll still explore as much as I can so I can see what’s the best to take at the end of the day. (at the end I didn’t take it so I’ll just show this as a part of the progress here.)
2. Word and Image
For this word and image exercise, I tried to brainstorming ideas from the magazines because I really wanted to try some cut and paste method for this exercise. There’s a lot of garments, makeups, handbags, hairstyles and footwear in them. So, I started to think of some ideas with high heels and I tried to cut them out and see what I’ll get.
Feedback from Lecturer
For the Harmony design, ms said the colours and the design are matching the concept of harmony. But the idea of war in this harmony principle is quite thought-provoking. Overall everything is fine so I can use it as my final design outcome.
For the Word and Image, she said the front of the high heel can be a little bit bigger because the shape is not that fit at the moment. Also, she asked should I really need to put all the shoes together, maybe it can be only one shoe that can present a more powerful feeling as I wanted to put a positive quotes. When I've done the digital work, I showed it to Ms and she gave me some advices. She said it would be more complete to put the word "The World is at Our Feet" and asked me to try upper and lower cases for the words. I took the advise and came out with a final design.

Rationale :
The reason why I made this design is because I want to show something about war in harmony principle. People may feel unreasonable because that's nothing to do with harmony when we talk about war. And this is why the war idea comes to my mind because I thought it is quite sarcastic and I would like to see the result. People ask for peace and freedom but sometimes what they do may be the opposite things. I hope this design can convey something to people and make them think about it. Do we need wars to exchange harmony or harmony is already somewhere out there without wars.

Rationale :
At the very first place, I wanted to do something feminine because when it comes to high heels, we automatically will think about women. So, I can combine the idea with women and the future. Also, high heels always give me some cool, strong, tough business lady sensation so it will be suitable with some very positive and powerful slogan. I think this design comes out with a fashion sense because of the colours and designs of the high heels. So it may also convey the idea that the world is always related to fashion and arts. People with creativity is always admired by a number of people so they do have the world at their feet.
Reflection
In this exercise, I developed more techniques and skills. I used physical and digital methods to finish each exercise but actually I was not that good in digital works before. I was thinking to use cut and paste for my Word and Image but I hope I can challenge myself so I decided to go with Adobe Photoshop. I think everything is quite fine and at the end of the day, we still need to grasp in different methods so why don't I learn it now. Although I was really struggling at the beginning of doing my Word and Image exercise because I really got no idea how should I play with my footwear but finally I got ideas popped up in my mind. I'm quite happy with my works because I'm not only do it for the submission but also for me to express something. I always hope there's something in my design to tell so I think I'm satisfied with my works for exercise 3.
