PROJECT 2 : SENSE OF PLACE

WEEK 8 - WEEK 10

1. Recap of Lecture :

Week 8

In this project, Ms Jinchi taught us about Observation and Sense of Place.

A designer’s role is to solve problems with effective visual communication.
“Problems” : ranging from personal goals to community events, from corporate functions to world changing projects - all through creative, visual communication means.

The Importance of Observation
Being observant means to be attentive to surroundings, pay attention to the details and be analytical about them.
Observation can be an effective way to get ideas. Sources of observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings…

8 ways to improve power of observation :
1. Know your subject
 2. Slow down and look outward
3. Try something new
4. Improve your concentration by cutting out distractions
5. Challenge yourself to a mental workout
6. Test your observation by playing a memory game
7. Record and consider your observation
8. Stay inquisitive

Sense of Place
A sense of place can be expressed by photographs, collages, illustrations, scale model and more. We can started by documenting our observations about the place with different methods.

2. My Design Process :

Visual Research

Idea Exploration and Description

(Photographies taken by me in Japan at 2018)

For this project, I decided to use Japan as my idea so it’s going to be a sense of  Japan.
I found out some of my photographies that I taken in Japan and I'll combine them into one design. Before that, I did some mind-mapping about my feelings about Japan. It includes the culture, the vibe, colours tone, foods and my memories.

1. Mind-mapping

After creating this mind-map, I selected some of them that I wanted to add into my design because if I put all of them, it will be too much. I will try to choose some that give me strong feelings or things that have memories with me.

2. Sense of Place
Sense of Place 1.1

After selecting all the items, I decided to do my design in a gashapon. This is because every time I open a gashapon, I get excited and surprised with what’s inside. It is the same feeling when I went to Japan, I’m always excited with the places I’m going to visit. Even the foods can cheer up my mood. Also, gashapon is the thing I like the most in Japan because I got little twin stars toys in it.
(which is my favourite Sanrio character ><)

Sense of Place 1.2

Sense of Place 1.3

I redraw the design in a better composition. My feelings for Japan is strong, fun and youth. The posters on the buildings are huge that give me a visual impact, the vibe is full of peacefulness but not messy although there’s a lot of things. I tried to use colours to create a harmony vibe.

Sense of Place 1.4

I used the old design to try on some colours and see which match better. For most of the buildings, I used the same colour as how I saw in Japan because I wanted to reappear the same feelings that I got from Japan.

Sense of Place 1.5

So, this is the final design outcome with matching colours (mostly in red, yellow and beige) that I saw in Japan and some memorable and representative places.

Feedback From Lecturer

In week 10, we have a feedback section with Ms Jinchi. I showed ms my sketches and ideas about my Japan trip. She said she can see where my ideas came from because I have attached my photographs and she thinks the design is interesting and obviously related to Japan. The only thing is I have to focus and decide which colours I will choose to match the sense of  Japan in my design.

Final Design Outcome

Brief Rationale

The reason why I created this design for Sense of Place is because I always believe that a place is always important to a person. If you exist in a comfortable place, you will feel energetic, enjoyable and you even don't want to leave the place.
So, I picked Japan which is a place I shared memorable memories with my family and me myself. I enjoyed every moments in there and hope to bring that feelings with me till the end of my life. I tried my best to reappear the sceneries that I saw in there and reconstruct them in a cute and fun way, which is how I feel about Japan. I really love the buildings, the culture and almost everything in Japan except I still don't feel comfortable with eating raw foods (hehe).
I think that a best place is the place where you can share the precious moment with your love ones (my family). So when I got a chance to make something that may last forever, I decided to create my own Sense of Place - Japan.

Reflection For The Week

I enjoyed doing this project because it brings back my happy memories and I felt like I was traveling to there with my family again. This is a fun and meaningful project since we can't really travel to anywhere at this moment, but we can still feel the place with our senses.
