EXERCISE 3 : SEWING COMMON STITCH

WEEK 4

Today, we learnt about 5 simple common stitches using sewing machine on calico fabric. I'm excited about this exercise because it is a very new experience to me.

Lecture Notes
Seam: is a term that refers to a stitching lie where two fabrics are stitched together in a garment or other article. The stitching line along the seam is called the seam line. The seam allowance is the space between the fabric edge and the seam line.

1. STRAIGHT STITCH
This is the most basic stitch and I think most of the type of stitches begin with this straight stitch.

2. STAYSTITCH OR EDGESTITCH
First stitch a straight stitch and press the seam allowance to one side. The purpose is decorative or to create a stronger seam.

3. TOP STITCH
Stitch a straight stitch first and press the seam allowance to one side. It is almost same with edgestitch but it is on top.

4. WELT SEAM
It is something like combination of edgestitch and top stitch. It is to make the garment tougher so it won't come apart.

5. FRENCH SEAM
For this seam, we have to sew it wrong side to wrong side. Before that, iron the fabric so it won't be wavy. It’s very good for silk, lace and those fabrics we don’t want to have raw edges on the inside.

Extra. FLATFELLED SEAM

My Thoughts

Obviously this is a must + useful exercise, I like it. I can't wait to make a bag for myself :D Before I start that, I noticed some important points which is we have to make sure which side should be facing each other, if not we may confuse with the sides and come out with a wrong side facing up.
