FINAL PROJECT: SEMESTER COMPILATION

WEEK 1  - WEEK 14

Project Brief:

This module requires us to design a collection of 4 looks with digital health as our theme.

In the first week, Miss Shaimaa brief us what we should do in this semester.

At first, I planned to do a collection that is giving futuristic and technology and can be wear as sportswear or daily wear. Because it’s about digital health so I think wear it while doing sport can better utilise the function. I also did some research about how I want the device be placing so it won't effect the look and make the person wearing feel uncomfortable. Below are the types of device I wish to achieve.

After having an idea for the digital health device's designs, I started to think about my garments' design so I know what I am going to do and show the engineering students.

Before I start designing, I did some research on futuristic fashion, technology fashion and avant-garde fashion. I want my collection to bring out a futuristic and technology feel.

After deciding the fashion style for my collection, I did some research to see what is the trend for now and what materials are suitable for sportswear. I found out now is very trendy with cut-out and asymmetrical design and it is matching with making sportswear look and so i decided to go with that. I started to search pictures with cut-out design and I found out that it looks a little bit like architecture building, especially parametric architecture. Then I started to do some research about it. I felt that parametric architecture is giving futuristic feel and the colour combination are always in grey, black and white, just feels like a scientist lab. So I decided to use parametric architecture as my preliminary inspiration.

Photos above are the inspiration I got from Pinterest, I searched for both architecture building and structure garments on models to get some ideas. Also, I realised parametric architecture is created by hard and sharp shapes so I decided to add organic shapes into it to make it smooth and asymmetric.

Ms Shaimaa also introduced us to use Midjourney to get inspiration. We just need to insert related words and it will comes out with many results. We can also put in photos and let it design more similar designs for us.

After having all the ideas from Pinterest, Google, and Midjourney, I started to create an initial moodboard and concept board to let me stick with the theme I going to use for this collection. I play with all the parametric buildings, structures and designs I got from Midjourney.

Final Moodboard

After creating the initial moodboard, I have some ideas and started to search elements for my final moodboard. I also learnt something in digital illustration to create a better moodboard.
From my moodboard, you can see this collection is about Eco-tech, Futuristic, Parametric and my collection is called "Parametric Couture : The fusion of organic and synthetic fashion." There is also a colour guide in my moodboard.

Final Concept Board

Same as my moodboard, after creating a initial concept board, I have a clearer idea for my concept and I started to create the final design concept board. There is a conceptual story in it and some keywords about this collection.

Once I done my moodboard and concert board, I started to draw some sketches and play with parametric shapes. Also, I tried to design inner wear that is suitable for sport. Below are my 10 initial designs.

From my design, there's a lot of 3D structure and construction because of my theme inspiration. I have discussed with lecturer about the technique and materials. I decided to go for hard net and leather to create structure, nylon and stretchable spandex for outer and inner. I once thought of PVC but because it is not really suitable so I took it out from my idea. And I chose white, grey, black and red for the as the colour.

Figure 4.7

There is a lot of 3D structure in my design but since I'm still not in the stage of making 3D printing pattern, I decided to change them into something else. So, I redraw my looks into something that is more wearable and able to create. Below are the four looks that I chose from initial designs.

Figure 4.8

After choosing out these 4 looks, I started to do try with different method to create the shapes, including pattern drafting, draping, should pad and Eva form to create shapes. I realised the shapes are very hard to create in a short time so no choices I have to change the designs again. Finally, below are my final 4 designs.

Figure 4.9

Before start making out the garments, I drew the technical drawings for each designs to better understand the construction and pattern layout because my designs have a lot of layers and panels

Before making patterns, we also learnt how to use CLO 3D to create patterns so we are more familiar with our designs and we understand well on how to create the actual patterns afterwards.

Most of my garments are made from master patterns and draping.
