WEEK 1 - WEEK 14
Final Reflection
In this Design Principle programme, I just realised I really have learnt a lot of things when I gather all these designs into one blog. Although the lesson was learnt step by step, little by little, but accumulate little makes a mickle. I'm really happy when I looked back to all the designs I have made.
From the first few weeks, I learnt about some basic principles of design. Some may be easier to understand, some may be harder, but when I take more times to really understand it, I can master it quite well. When I fully understand the principles, I got to learnt more about how to make one design stands out or better.
The thing I enjoyed most is I can put myself into every of my designs, if you look at the reason why I created them, you'll see all of my thoughts. This makes the process of creating more interesting and meaningful. It is not just an artwork but a reflection of oneself.
The thing I'm not that enjoy is maybe the time, There's too much thing to do because I'm also a fashion student, but if there's not deadline, I can't tell when I'm going to finish a work, so I guess deadline is a must although I'm always running with time.
I realised I'm more into things that is a little bit sad, or I can say its about life, human or society, I love to create things with these feelings and thoughts.
I think nothing much changed actually, I'm still being me and create my own style of design, if there's something changed, I think it is I have more knowledge about design now, and I believe I can do it more well in the future.
To be honest, I think everything is going really good. Ms may heard of this for lots of time but I still have to say, you're one of the most nice lecturers that appear in my life. You're friendly, thoughtful, responsible, humorous I can say ><, and lovely.
I knew this is my reflection for the programme but I still want to say, hope to see you again in the future, wish you well and goodbye Dr. JinChi!
EXERCISE 1
1. Contrast
Rationale :
For this design, it is not so complicated or much message to tell, I was trying to show the evident contrast between black and white, front and back. I think it is quite cute and to use lollipop as my element.
2. Gestalt Theory
Rationale :
I think the fog and tree leaves look alike so when people look at this design, their first reaction may wonder is that fog or tree. The reason why I wanted to do this effect is to reflect the society. Nowadays, we can’t really see clearly fog or tree from a far distance because factories are increasing and trees are decreasing. The fogs are slowly cover up all the trees and do we still care about the nature? They have to recognise what is the thing that they really care about, the nature plant or the manufacturing plant.
EXERCISE 2
1. Balance
Rationale :
This design is about dead and alive, when we don’t have lungs, we left bone. There is a balance between the visual weights of lungs and bone, but do the weights of life and death are balance? I went to Google and searched for the definition of life and death. This is one of the article I found meaningful so I wanted to share it here : A Balance Between Life and Death - https://www.huffpost.com/entry/lessons-from-steve-jobs_b_1007789 Also, I found it interesting when I finished the colouring because it came out with two different feelings. At the bone side, it looks dead and dry but at the lungs side, there’s so much life.
2. Movement
Rationale :
For this design, I wanted to show 2 types of movement which is the teardrops and the movement of water in the pond. The reason why I added the pond is because I noticed that people can easily notice a thing when it is moving from somewhere to another. But when it comes to something that only moves in its own area, people take times to notice it. I hope this design can convey a message to people. “In living, no matter how busy we are, we should always remember to slow down and notice the little things.”
EXERCISE 3
1. Harmony
Rationale :
The reason why I made this design is because I want to show something about war in harmony principle. People may feel unreasonable because that's nothing to do with harmony when we talk about war. And this is why the war idea comes to my mind because I thought it is quite sarcastic and I would like to see the result. People ask for peace and freedom but sometimes what they do may be the opposite things. I hope this design can convey something to people and make them think about it. Do we need wars to exchange harmony or harmony is already somewhere out there without wars.
2. Word and Image
Rationale :
At the very first place, I wanted to do something feminine because when it comes to high heels, we automatically will think about women. So, I can combine the idea with women and the future. Also, high heels always give me some cool, strong, tough business lady sensation so it will be suitable with some very positive and powerful slogan. I think this design comes out with a fashion sense because of the colours and designs of the high heels. So it may also convey the idea that the world is always related to fashion and arts. People with creativity is always admired by a number of people so they do have the world at their feet.
PROJECT 1
Self-portrait
Rationale
I created this self-portrait based on my personality and my emotions. It is to show how I decided to express my mood to people and how I use them. When I'm with people, most of the time I'm cheerful, outgoing, positive and fun. But when I'm alone, I may get blank, upset or negative. I don't think this means I have to always be with people. I'm more agree to say that I'm a person like that, not happy all the time but this is not a bad thing. I still can see beautiful things in my "throat" even it is not a bright day. I accept who I am, although I'm not the optimism type of people, but I know that I always cheer myself up and have feelings for everything. This can always proof that I'm still alive because life is up and down.
PROJECT 2
Sense of Place
Rationale
The reason why I created this design for Sense of Place is because I always believe that a place is always important to a person. If you exist in a comfortable place, you will feel energetic, enjoyable and you even don't want to leave the place.
So, I picked Japan which is a place I shared memorable memories with my family and me myself. I enjoyed every moments in there and hope to bring that feelings with me till the end of my life. I tried my best to reappear the sceneries that I saw in there and reconstruct them in a cute and fun way, which is how I feel about Japan. I really love the buildings, the culture and almost everything in Japan except I still don't feel comfortable with eating raw foods (hehe).
I think that a best place is the place where you can share the precious moment with your love ones (my family). So when I got a chance to make something that may last forever, I decided to create my own Sense of Place - Japan.

Rationale
I took Julia as my design because she means a lot to me and I hope I can have at least a artwork is about her. For this design, you can see a few layers inspired by the poster I chose for visual analysis. These layers are Julia, Roman Numerals, hourglass and the 2 half round elements at the outer layer represent to clock due to the shape. This design is about how time changes a person or even a thing. From the top to the bottom, the Julia’s outlook is slowly changing. I replace the sand in the hourglass with water because water is the main reason why Julia changed. But when it comes to a human, water is also the most important thing to us. Although washing her makes her broken, but it is also the reason why she becomes clean before. So I guess there's always 2 sides in one thing. Bad or good, we have to take it because this is one of the lesson of life. I put 19 Roman Numerals because it’s the number of years that Julia have been with me. I hope in the future, I can still add more numbers to it.
